| The Meridian Gate is the frontispiece of the Forbidden City with the meaning of "exposing to the south in the middle, locating at Ziwu". It is high and majesty, two tower facing each other as Five-phoenix spreading the wings, which is the nonesuch of loyal palace building of China containing traditional culture. The more important is that in the time of feudal dynasty, it is the tools to reveal imperial power and stateliness, and the emblem of emperor and Court.After replacing Ming Dynasty, Qing Government takes over the royal palace of Ming, expressing this ethnic minority regime accepts and utilizes the culture of Han, with the distinct signal of using its existent function. This dissertation is to study the function of the Meridian Gate, the frontispiece of royal palace, and its meanings of culture and politics, and how to use this function since Qing Dynasty. Writer thinks this research is un-split part of research of China royal palace culture. The in-depth research of the Meridian Gate's function can help to better understand the Meridian Gate's building art feature; can provide important example materials for palace gate, Court ceremony and palace guarding.This dissertation divides the function of the Meridian Gate to the three segmentation of "Ceremony", "Court" and "Guard", and introduces separately. Writer thinks that "Ceremony" is the core function of the Meridian Gate, the Dynasty regulates the relationship between emperor and ministers, maintains the govern system through all kinds formalities, the Meridian Gate plays key role in this area. The function of "Court" is realized via the three celebration of "Jinchun", "Awarded Calendar" and "Triumph" in front of the Meridian Gate. The sturdiness of the Meridian Gate can build up the royal power, reveal country stateliness, therefore makes the functions of the Meridian Gate more outstanding. For the function of "Guard", it is realized by the rigid palace guarding system of "Eight-Banner armies". The guarding function of the Meridian Gate performs very well since Qing Dynasty. |
