This paper is intended to further understand the trends and achievements made up about the history of Ci theory and criticism on the basis of better understanding the history of Ci, which through detailed analysis of the literature materials concerning the dispute on Southern and Northern Song Dynasty. The paper consists of three parts: introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction sketches out the intention of the study and the achievements made up to now, outline the thesis ideas and choreography. The body part is divided into four sections, which is discussed the dispute between Southern and Northern Song Dynasty on history of the studies of Ci poems, with the chronological development as main thread. The first section is the understanding to Song Ci from Southern Song to Ming Dynasty. This section is divided into two parts: the first is discussed the understanding of Song Ci in Southern Song Dynasty. The Southern Song scholars of the Ci poetry gradually saw the merits of Southern Song Ci itself, though still admiring Northern Song Ci. At the same time, they came to realize that these advantages, compared with Northern Song Ci, also have their uniqueness. In the process of evolution of Ci poem itself, Southern Song Ci poem was not inferior to Northern Song Ci poem. The changes were not the obstacle to the development of Ci poem, instead they promoted the maturity and perfection of Ci poem. The second is discussed the understanding of Song Ci from Jin and Yuan Dynasties to Ming Dynasty. In Jin and Yuan Dynasties, the Ci theory had no achievements because of lack of innovation practice. So scholars failed to make a clear exposition and summary to the dispute. The attitude of The Ming Dynasty scholars on this topic is paranoid. They appreciated the Northern Song Ci and show their contempt for the Southern Song Ci. While acknowledging voice of the Southern Song Ci could occasionally be heard, this unit ripple small streams was finally submerged in an infinite admiration for Northern Song Ci.The second section is the dispute between Southern and Northern Song Dynasty and its impact in early Qing dynasty. This section is also divided into two parts: the first is that Yuan Jian Ci School advocated Southern Tang Dynasty and Northern Song Dynasty, but rejected Southern Song. Yun Jian Ci School is the most influential and also the first Ci School in late Ming and early Qing Dynasties that provoked the dispute between Southern and Northern Song Dynasties. The view took an active part in eliminating the inappropriate image of Ci poem form Ming Dynasty, while the path of its increasing narrow view exposed its disadvantages. The second is that Yang Zhou Ci Term abandoned the view of Yun Jian Ci School. As Yun Jian Ci School was in a dominant position in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, its theory at that time also had a tremendous impact on the field of Ci theory, so the sound of the followers and the objectors appeared one after another. The paper takes Yang Zhou Ci and Xi Liang Ci Term as an example, analyzing the impact on Yun Jian Ci School and its improvement of the theory. The third section is the dispute of Zhe Xi Ci School between Southern and Northern Song Dynasty. After Yun Jian CI School, Zhe Xi Ci School pushed the dispute between Southern and Northern Song Dynasty to a climax. In this section, Zhe Xi Ci School was roughly divided into the early period and the late period by its self-development. The scholars of the school all advocated Southern Song, but there was also an obvious difference in some details which is worth our attention and deep thought. The fourth section is the debate of Chang Zhou Ci School between Southern and Northern Song Dynasty. As times change, Chang Zhou Ci School made a focus on the ideological criteria instead of the view of Zhe Xi Ci School which emphasized on the aesthetic standards. This corrected the negative impact of Zhe Xi Ci School. Bounded by the history of the School development, this section focuses on how it developed into the debate between Southern and Northern Song Dynasty from the dispute on Southern and Northern Song Dynasty, by selecting preliminary, medium, late-representatives Zhang Huiyan, Zhou Ji, Chen Tingzhuo whose theories as the main legislative points, and the discussion of other scholars in Chang Zhou Ci School as supplementary material. The conclusion consists of two parts, the first is taking Xie Zhangting as an example to think back the dispute ; the second is to consider the influence and significance of the dispute on Southern and Northern Song Dynasty on future generations.
