Material presentation mode in reading has got great attentions from researchers home and abroad in over 10 past years .However, the existing research results are not consistent. Background music is the auditory elements most widely used in multimedia learning ,but teachers always lack psychological basic knowledge when choosing appropriate multimedia background music. So it is necessary and of great practical value to study material presentation mode and background music in multimedia reading.Based on the reality of multimedia reading teaching for juniors in our country, through studying the effect of material presentation mode and background music on cognitive load in multimedia environments, this study was to provide theoretical guidance and reference for the reading instructional design.This study designed two experiments and aimed at investigating the roles of the presentation mode and background music in studying physical science and literae humaniores materials.Two experiments both adopted 3(non-music,light music and popular music) x 2 (pure text presentation, presentation of audio-visual integration) x 2 (music preference, non-music preference) experimental design.We got the following conclusions:Firstly ,there is difference on the reading score put by presentation mode.That is the reading score of audio-visual integration is higher than that of pure text presentation. Secondly,there is difference on cognitive load put by presentation mode.That is cognitive load of audio-visual integration is lower than that of pure text presentation.Thirdly,there is difference on reading score put by background music.That is the reading score of light music is better than that of non-music, the reading score of non-music is higher than that of popular music.Fourth ,there is difference on cognitive load put by background music.That is the cognitive load of non-music is lower than that of light music , the cognitive load of light music is lower than that of popular music.Fifth ,there is interaction between music preference and kinds of music. That is the reading score of music background music of music preference students is higher than that of non-music preference , the cognitive load of music preference students is lower than that of non-music preference.
