The Categorization Analysis Of The Polysemous Verb "上/ 下"

The research of the categorization about the verb"上/下"is not yet. But there was much the research of the verb"上/下". In this paper, based on previous studies on the"上/下"aboat the semantic description and analysis, and the use of category theory and cognitive theories of metaphor of"上/下"analysis of the scope of interpretation. This article includes introduction five parts.First part of the first areas of theory and polysemy phenomena are explained, and then the research results of the verb"上/下"were summarized, and that the current problems that need further study. Because previous studies have not been involved in areas of research, so expect this research to teaching as a second language vocabulary must be facilitated. Finally clear the object of this paper, theory, method and sources of the corpus.The second part is the analysis of the semantic system of inspection aboat"上/下".It includes the verb"上"and"下"semantic system of inspection.The semantic description and classification on"上/下"clearly reveals the semantic system of"上/下",which is better to reveals the categorization of"上/下".The third part is the analysis of the scope on"上".we divide the close-expansion and remote-expansion.This part is the focus of the article. The aspects of the space center is"the movement from low to high"in"上".The close-expansion with"上"is the space with more family similarity in semantic.But distance extension is less similary or even overlapped with other areas.The expansion of discussion on"上"will allow us to see"上"in the context of semantic extension clearly and understand a variety of the semantic in"上".The fourth part is the analysis of the scope in the verb"下".We divided the close-expansion and remote-expansion of"下".This part is also the focus of the article.The center semantic is"the movement from the top to bottom".The areas expanded from the center out of a lot of areas of significance which is relevant to the context,and we called close-expansion.But the semantic of"下"extended to conveying meaning, transferring meaning,using meaning and time meaning which is remote-expansion.The analysis of the categorization shows the expansion of the semantic.on"下", and the source of the various semantics understand in"下"clearly.The fifth part we descripe the asymmetry of"上/下"in the process of the categorization aboat"上/下".As the focus is categorization in this article,so the asymmetry is no detailed. The sixth part is the motivation analysis of the categorization on"上/下".Prototype theory were discussed on the explanation of the verb"上/下".And metaphor and image schema is the basic motivation in the categorization.This paper uses the categorization theory, cognitive metaphor, metonymy and image schemas cognitive style and so on. The areas of the categorization and motivation were analyzed and discussed about"上/下"in the paper.The value of this research will give some basic help in foreign language teaching.Finally, we reveal the value problem in the further study.
