The present study mainly aims to present a detailed analysis of redundant negation construction in Chinese under the conceptual framework of Verschueren's Adaptation Theory (2000) through investigating three aspects: 1) the types of redundant negation constructions; 2) the structure analysis of redundant negation construction; 3) reasons for people to employ redundant negation construction.Based on the previous studies, the definition of redundant negation construction in Chinese is given and the differences between the redundant negation construction and the non-redundant positive ones are identified. And according to the expressive function, redundant negation constructions are divided into 4 types: the category of number-time inadequacy, the category of condition, the category of irony and the category of result. From the analysis of the data, we find that: the use of redundant negation is a process of continuously choice-making with high consciousness. The use of redundant negation construction is actually the speaker's making adaptation to psychological world and social world. The conceptual framework of this study, the adaptation theory, has not only revealed the reasons for people to explore redundant negation construction, but also to what they adapt to.The findings of this study have profound theoretical and practical meanings on redundant negation constructions. Through the comprehensive analysis of the constructions and generation of redundant negation in Chinese, this study will shed some lights on the improvement of linguistic theories and language teaching.
