A Reconstruction Of Meaning In Translation

Deconstruction, as a significant branch of postmodernism, does not only enrich postmodernism, but also produces a great impact on vies and values in the academic world together with other postmodernist thoughts. As an initiator and champion of deconstruction, Jacques Derrida is the first to introduce deconstruction into translation studies and then forms a series of distinctive deconstructionist concepts of translation based on meaning as per différance. In reality, différance, a core of Derrida's deconstruction strategies, does provide a new perspective for translation studies. In the meantime, however, it also bears many inconsistencies within itself, such as rupture of the unity between form and meaning, neglect of representational property of sign, fuzzification between significance and signification in semiotics as well as violation of the law of identity in logic, so as to call into question the feasibility and rigidity of its deconstructionist translation concepts of meaning. This thesis hereby plans to make a rational reconstruction of meaning in translation on the basis of an in-depth profiling of meaning as per différance. By means of integrating theoretic points with specific case studies, the author tries to carry out an in-depth profiling so as to reveal what is self-contradictory and even absurd and to open a door for reconstruction of meaning in translation studies.In this thesis, the author makes questioning and rethinking of meaning as per différance as well as its extended concepts of translation, and intends to reveal the paradoxical property resting with themselves through theoretical interpretations and specific case studies and reasoning, so as to reinstate a meaning in translation.
