Narratology was first coined by the French scholar Tzvetan Todorov in 1969.Modern narratology is agreed to have begun with the Russian Formalists, particularly Vladimir Propp. In over half a century, the scholars of every country, especially in the west, have got many gratifying achievements. However, people have been accustomed to restrict narrative research into the narrow world, which are consisting of mythology, morphology of the folktale and novel aesthetics for a long time. Such limitation has seriously affected the development of narratology. In 1980s, American scholar Wallace Martin published his book Theories of Narrative. Since then, narrative scholars began to do research in various fields. Mariology has entered a pluralistic research period.Narrative exists not only in stories, but also in drama, film-TV and other artistic forms. The differences between these forms are only in their narrative forms or methods. In this thesis, the author is going to discuss the feasibility of analyzing drama texts by using narrative theories, and investigate the role unreliable narration plays on promoting plots and creating characters. The whole thesis falls into five chapters. Chapter one will give a brief introduction about the literary work and its author. In this part, the author also introduces some basic concepts in narratology; chapter two will discuss the narrative characteristics in the western drama, especially in Shakspeare's.and demonstrate that drama is a kind of narrative works; chapter three is going to put unreliable narration theory into The Strange Interlude, proving that unreliable narration has great efforts on promoting plots and creating characters; chapter four is trying to discuss the special artistic effect caused by mixing a large number of monologues and asides together. The monologue and aside are familiar with dialogism, so we should be careful to distinguish between them during our research. Chapter five figures out that the function of unreliable narrator is to help readers to understanding the complex characters, and focus on its theme meaning of this drama. Finally, the thesis author will restate the thesis of the present study in the concluding part.
