The Social Status Of Citizen Women In The Roman Republic

Women Played an important role in the history of ancient Rome ever, especially in Roman Republic. The develpoment of the Economic Slavery and the Change of the class structure caused a strong impact and influence of traditional women's perceptions and women's status. On this basis, Women occupied an important position in Economic, political and Social Life etc. aspects. This can not be said to a rare exception in The world's ancient civilizations of female unknown submerged. This article conducted a systemic study on women during the Roman Republic from the historical angle. The full text is composed of five parts except foreword and conclusion.The foreword has elaborated this article's research significance, the domestic and foreign scholar's research results and this article research technique.The first part discussed the girl's birth and education, and analyzed the patriarchal concept as well as views and attitudes on female education, educational methods in the Roman society.The second part disserted that Romans marriage forms emphasized gradually the protection of women, and leaned gradually toward women's rights by describing wedding contract, marriage forms and Vestal Virgin, analysing marriage categories and marriage forms in Period of the Roman Republic and elaborating women's status in religious culture. They struggle together so that Roma men were forced to give up some political rights and economic rights.By comparing and studying women's divorce and remarriage in early Republic and later Republic, the fourth part has revealed the historical facts that female obtained gradually freedom in the area of divorce and remarriage in the whole Roman Republic. This freedom has willfully fall trend.The fifth part gathered up and summaryed the improvement performance of women's status,and analysed the raising reasons of women's status from the war, patriarchal institution, history, wealth etc. aspects.The conclusion part has narrated that women played a unique role in economics, politics, culture, social life with their various stages of growth, has analyzed the reasons which the female consciousness was full in the period of the Roman Republic, had pointed the substantive method by which women seeked their own independent in present society.
