Since the Reform period of 1980s, the oil painting of portrait has taken a great, unparalleled leap in many aspects such as colors, compositions, techniques and styles. Beginning from merely pursuing of realism, it has already become diversified in the new millennium. Whether in techniques, themes and styles, diversity has been far more enriched.After the western society created developed industrial civilizations and stepped into the modern epoch, the fine arts works has already passed its glorious summit and gradually left the world and beauty in our common sense. However, the works has lost themselves in the subjective spiritual world of the artists themselves. The artists have broken from some traditional ways of arts expression such as classicism, realism and so on. Their works has made a revolutionary change in style and iconography.If we look through the transition process of the iconography and style in the oil painting of portrait from 1950s to today, we could find that, there is some essential difference in "iconography" and "style" in painting. Heavy questions are before us:Does the fine arts works in contemporary China make a real breakthrough of the iconography? Or is it only a kind of transformation of style? Is there anything related to the essence of academic ideas or any other thought-provoking ideas in the fine arts works in contemporary China? Does the painting art really function to enlighten the humans? Which is the most important key of painting arts:"Expression of the mental reality" or "Expression of the real reality"? Should we create art works "for arts'sake" or "for techniques' sake"?...
