Portrait photography is the oldest and the most important field of research inphotography, which originated from people’s need of making pictures of their own.With the development of society and photography itself, the connotation anddenotation of portrait photography have unceasingly broadened; the social values andthe styles of portrait photography have become rich and diverse. In this paper, portraitphotography refers to any photographic presentation which focuses on human image.Bases on this general definition, the analysis of the characteristics and the formationof styles of a photographer are of special significance in terms of cultural and socialvalues.A photographer plays the core role in portrait photography. The formation ofthe personal characteristics of a photographer is a dynamic process and attributed tosome complicated factors. And personal characteristics would further develop into aunique style of the photographer.In this paper, the theoretical research of portrait photography is conducted fromthe perspective of the personal characteristics of a photographer. This researchconsists of two parts. Part one is the analysis of the factors which define theformation of the characteristics of a photographer, including time, culture and society.In part two it is discussed that the personal characteristics of a photographer decidethe style of photography. The style of a portrait photographer is a combination of thesense of value, personality, life experiences, tastes in art, and a gender-basedunderstanding of portrait photography. The aim of this research is to find out therelation between personal characteristics and the formation of photographic style. Thefindings will have some implications in exploring factors influencing the formation ofphotographic styles, and the principles and skills of portrait photography.
