The art of Chinese calligraphy, in the process of responding to the requirement of contemporary transformation, forms many theories and creative schools such as "classicists", modernist school", and "academism". These schools, because of its different creative motives, purposes and means, present varied superficial forms of "modern calligraphy" for the enormous stock of traditional calligraphic resources on the one hand and the profound influence of modern fine art trend in the West on the evolution of "modern calligraphy" on the other hand. The theory of aesthetic modernity is one of the sub-propositions concerning aesthetics from tremendous propositions relating to modernity, many of which can serve as a source of reference for us to comprehend various modern calligraphic schools. The thesis, through an examination of the genesis and development process of modern calligraphy, focuses on the analysis of the theoretical direction and creative objectives of "modernist" calligraphy and the creative mode of "academism", and in the meantime makes contrast and comparison by employing related theories of aesthetic modernity, serving for a clearer understanding of the thread of thought of "modern calligraphy".
