Group work is communicative language learning activity which is loved and widely used by English teachers. Group work can create a pleasant learning environment, stimulate learning enthusiasm and students'interest, and train them to communicate in English. However, in the practice of teaching, there are many misunderstandings and problems. For these problems, teachers often make judgments and treatments according to personal experiences in most cases, which are lack of systematic analysis. This study is an attempt to improve the effectiveness of group work in English classes by understanding and solving problems in the process of group work.This essay consists of six chapters. Chapter One firstly clarifies issues raised in this paper, as well as the significance of research and research methods. Chapter Two briefly introduces cooperative learning, communicative teaching and the second language acquisition theories, which provides the theoretical basis for this study. Chapter Three combs the present research status of group work in college English classroom at home and abroad. Chapter Four describes the design and implementation of this study, including research questions, study objects and research procedures. Chapter Five analyses all the data collected from the written material, the debate and the questionnaires. Chapter Six is the conclusion of this study and enlightenment. It describes the important role of group work for English majors, clarifies the factors which hinder the success of group work, and summarizes the enlightenment of this research.This study examines the group work in author's classroom, analyzes the problems and factors which hinders the successful group work, offers suggestions to group work in the future. It is meaningful and useful.
