Intellectuals In Those Years

Zhang Xianliang is one of the most active writers returned from abroad since "Cultural Revolution". He has many influencial literatures such as"Lantana Flower","Half Of The Man Is The Women","Practicing Death".I try to put the writer who is an intellectual into time to study the changing of the social from the intellectual characters he wrote. In "Lantana Flower" wrote in the early 1980s, the intellectuals still showed their respect to the people at the bottom of the social and they suspect themselves. Although the writer created another kind of power to make force to break the connection of the characters, he made effort to give balance between the people at the bottom of the social and the intellectuals. In the novel "Half Of The Man Is The Women", Zhang Xianliang didn't try to do this any more. The intellectuals shouldered the tribulation and the thinking of the future. This is because of the feeling of the original sin and the shouldering of the social responsibility which is deep into the intellectuals mind. But because if this, the intellectuals felt more undisturbed when they forsake the people. They didn't need to worry about exposing the seamy of their own, which was weakened by the moral level of their suffering. The writer's attitude changed a lot through the novel "Practicing Death". The proud man was not there for the tribulation destroyed the whole "meaning world". Zhang ridiculed the absurd politics by describe the obsession of dead, and he also express his worry about the status of the social.However, since 1990s, Zhang Xianliang act as a businessman more than a writer. The novels published then lost the features in the ones published in 1980s. The problem of the novel "Half Of The Man Is The Women" got more serious. Tribulation mean more to the individual than the social. Such changes brought the crisis which can't be made up by the novels wrote later such as "Puberty" and "My Bodhi Tree". All these lead to the marginalization of the writer and the reduction of the study to Zhang Xianliang's work.
