Looking back to the study history of Zhou Zuoren's essays, scholars of Modern Chinese Literature has concentrated on two aspects. One is his contribution on theory, which refers to the introduction of the concept of "familiar essay"; the other is that how the essay written by Zhou Zuoren explain the concept. Such conduction is not enough, though. Since he died in 1967, such conduction is not enough to make a proper evaluation on Zhou Zuoren. Therefore, the dissertation focuses on essays written by Zhou Zuoren in a special period, that is 1930-1937.There are two topics that will be discussed. The way that is used by Zhou Zuoren to complete the essay is quite strange, for it seems just reciting the paragraphs written by ancient Chinese writers. And some scholars hold the idea that it infer the fact that Zhou Zuoren has lost the possibility to write by him. But, by analyzing four aspects of the recited essay, that is the rhetoric of irony, the main theme, the structure and how the implied author works, we may come to a conclusion that the recited essay show a deep and sharp observation on the reality, which means that it is an effective way to express how Zhou Zuoren thought about the Chinese history and the future. Meanwhile, Zhou Zuoren has done quite a lot of experiment on style writing, showing how free the modern Chinese essay can be, as an effective way to express the idea on how you look the world.
