E-C Humor Translation From The Perspective Of Cultural Differences

Humor is an expression form of language and an expression way of human emotions. It reflects people's life attitudes, emotions, values and so on. As an important part of language, humor has penetrated every corner of human society and has become a necessary part of our life. Since humor has some features and functions that general language does not have, to a certain degree, we can say that humor implies the essence of language. Most humorous language is refined and implicit, and always gives a surprise in the end. It can make people feel relaxed and create a relaxing environment where people can freely communicate.People with different languages communicate with each other through translating. In a society where cross-cultural communication is getting frequent, humor shouldn't be neglected. Because of the large amount of cultural information in humor, humor translation has become a big challenge to translators. Since different nations have different historical backgrounds, geographical environment, religious beliefs and living conventions, translators need to analyze the cultural differences between the source language and the target language and find out the cultural connotation of the original text if they want to convey the humorous effect of the original text better.Although cultural differences do bring challenges to humor translation, yet there are always ways dealing with it. With a large number of examples, this thesis aims to conclude that humor translation is a difficult point, but all humor can become translatable with translators'efforts and cultural blending.This thesis consists of three parts.The introduction mainly deals with the relevant researches, the reason and purpose of the topic selection, then illustrates the theoretical and practical meanings in humor translation from the perspective of cultural differences.The body is divided into four chapters.Chapter One is an introduction to the definition, classification and function of humor.Chapter Two discusses the cultural differences between Chinese and English from the four aspects of historical background, geographical environment, religious belief and custom.In Chapter Three, based on the preceding two chapters, differences and similarities between Chinese and English humor are explored by analyzing lots of humor examples. The differences and similarities between Chinese and English humors will offer materials used in Chapter Four.Chapter Four focuses on untranslatability and translatability of humor translation under the influence of cultural differences and the solutions, and the promoting effect of cultural blending on humor translation.The last part is the conclusion. Cultural difference is a challenge to humor translation, but there are always ways dealing with it. All humor can become translatable with translators'efforts and cultural blending.
