Oxymoron is a common figure of speech in Chinese language. Recently, much of researchers are engaged on the study of the oxymoron in various angles. From the existing literature, the objectives of this work are to find out the capabilities of the oxymoron. This paper will be divided mainly into four parts, which are the nature and scope, classification, causes, and the effect of expression. The first chapter constitutes an introduction including a review of the speech style, but more particularly the recent advances and disadvantages of literature on this field, including value and thinking of research and innovation. In second chapter, we shall talk about the definition of oxymoron on its nature and scope. Firstly, there is the definition of nature. On the basis of research achievements, we will find out oxymoron is a common figure of speech, also compare it with contrast, foil and epigram. In order to get connotation of contraction in oxymoron, we shall go to compare this one with other four separations of meanings in "Modern Chinese Dictionary". As follows, the conflict between speech and behavior, contradiction in dialectic, or the contradiction in formal logic and conflict among opposing things. The chapter three is the classification of oxymoron. This part is innovative. On the basis of the previous chapter, we classify oxymoron into two types. First, in one semantic orientation, there is contradiction between the orienting and the oriented. Second, in the semantic orientation structures of two groups, the two orientings with common oriented are contradictory, which constitute two situations:the two orientings at the same syntactic level and at different syntactic level. The two orientings at the different syntactic level can cause a linguistic unit as a whole or partial contradiction. The chapter four is the cause and expressive effect of oxymoron. The study of the figure of speech can be described from four aspects:complexity in objective world, linearity in language, contradiction in ideology and conceptual blending theory in cognitive style. And there are three prominent features. Firstly, oxymoron is brief, novel and unique. Secondly, it can help us to appreciate more fully the implied complexity of feelings. Thirdly, it gives us different experience after reading unfamiliar combination with two incongruous terms. In a conclusion, this paper adopts a new perspective. The comprehensive study on definition, classification, causes and effect of expressive will help people to understand oxymoron deeply.
