Both American female writer Margaret Mitchell's masterpiece Gone with the Wind and Australian female writer Colleen McCullough's The Thorn Birds are considered as the two classic love stories. Although the two works are written in different times and countries, they share many similarities, such as the exquisite female language and the distinctive characters, especially the similarities of female consciousness existing in the two works. The present research about the similarities of these two novels is a little. Besides, the research especially in the aspect of the similarities of female consciousness in the two novels is less.On the basis of studies of female consciousness, the thesis first elaborates the origin and the concepts related to the female consciousness. And it points out that female consciousness refers to a kind of awareness which describes the female's status, function and value in the larger society. Then, the thesis analyzes the female consciousness reflecting from the character analysis of the heroines in Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind and Colleen McCullough's The Thorn Birds, and summarizes the similarities of female consciousness in the two novels. All of the heroines in two novels are the rebellious women miniatures who are against the male oppression and the brave true love pursuers who realize self-worth. All of them have undergone a process which is from losing the self to investigating the self and finally fully awakening their female consciousness.According to the analysis on the similarities of female consciousness in two novels, the thesis helps to enhance the readers' understanding about the female consciousness in two novels. Further more, the thesis fills in the blank of the studies on the similarities of female consciousness in two novels.
