Playing a significant part in the course of English teaching and learning in Higher Vocational Colleges, English testing is an effective means of testing and evaluating the quality of the English teaching. However, most of the teachers and students have not realized the importance, purposes, functions of English tests and the relationship between testing and teaching and learning as well as the backwash of testing on teaching and learning. By investigating and analyzing the current English testing models, the author finds that there do exist some serious problems, which exerts negative effects on English teaching and learning in Higher Vocational Colleges. Based on this fact, this thesis analyzes the relationship between testing and teaching, between testing and learning, between testing and teachers, between testing and students as well as the influence of testing on EFL teaching and learning. And then, in view of the problems existing in the English testing models in Higher Vocational Colleges, this thesis puts forward to some corresponding, proper and practical suggestions on the reform. In order to see whether testing has positive effects on EFL teaching and learning, an empirical study was conducted, which is made up of questionnaire survey among both teachers and students and different treatments for the experimental class and the control class. The subjects in the experimental class were taught something about testing and tested through a communicative approach while those in the control class were not taught anything about testing during this period. After a careful analysis of the data from the study, it is proved that testing and the communicative testing approach have positive backwash on EFL teaching and learning.
