Fundamental college English teaching is an important component of foreign language teaching in China. CET-4 and CET-6 are important applied linguistic practices in fundamental English teaching. Since CET-4 and CET-6 were held for the first time in 1987, they have played a very important role in college English teaching. Although their negative effects on college English teaching and learning are getting more and more obvious, CET-4 and CET-6 are still the most authoritative tests to non-English majors students in our country. CET-4 certificates are related to diplomas in many universities and the rate of passing CET-4 is used as an important criterion to evaluate teachers' work. In order to improve the passing rate, Simulated CET-4 is held in some universities before the authentic one. The purpose of the test is to make pre-evaluation of the English levels of those sophomores and to make for their drawbacks through the feedback obtained in time. So the quality of the simulated test itself is very important. This dissertation makes a comprehensive evaluation of the simulated CET-4 held by China University of Geosciences in June, 2002 with two fundamental testing factors: reliability and validity, as well as basic statistic research methods in applied linguistics. This dissertation starts with a theoretical overview of the latest development in the research field of validity and reliability. Then it makes a detailed analysis of each part of the simulated test and gives the ranking correctional coefficient between the simulated CET-4 and CET-4. The final part points out the advantages and disadvantages of the simulated CET-4 as well as the relationship between testing and teaching. It also gives some suggestions and views on how to improve reliability and validity in CET-4, as well as their impact on college English teaching reform.
