A Memetic Approach To Chinese Net Lingo

The aim of this thesis is to employ the theory of memetics to study Chinese Net Lingo, its classification, ways of transmission as well as its relationship with principle of economy.In this thesis, the majority of the study is based on the qualitative analysis of the data, which involves both ideas and data. In detail, given that the target of this study is Chinese Net Lingo, thus the main source of data is the Internet. What's more, some of the data are collected from the real communication between me and my friends when we chat online while others are collected through different ways, including radio, the Internet, TV, newspapers, magazines, etc.Through studying on Chinese Net Lingo, the author finds that it is truly a significant move to study it from a memetic point of view. Further investigations indicate that the word-building of Chinese Net Lingo embodies the Principle of Economy.Yet people pass different judgments on Net Lingo, we should adopt a dialectical approach towards it in a bid to guide it to achieve beneficial effect.The originality of this thesis lies in that the author carries out the study of Chinese Net Lingo from a memetic point of view and proves that it does follow the Principle of Economy.
