Technological Progress And People's All-round Development

The all-round development is good wishes of mankind, and it reflects the relentless pursuit for the truth, goodness and beauty. The progress of science and technology is the basic conditions for all-round development, but the misuse of it has brought about several negative impacts. This paper adopted the methods of dialectical and historical materialism in which the dialectical relationship between scientific progress and all-round development was expounded. The paper also discussed the methods of realizing mutual promotion and harmonious unification between scientific progress and all-round development.In the first part, the contents of all-round development were elaborated. The contents included human capacity, social relations and human needs, human beings as a whole, the all-round development of human personality and the harmonious development of individual and society. The rich contents of all-round development were further expounded and the author presented that all-round development was unity of the truth, goodness and beauty. Then the author discussed that highly advanced social productivity was needed in order to achieve all-round development. Science and technology are primary productivity and the fundamental conditions for achieving all-round development. Finally, through the observation of processes of science and technology, the author described that all-round development and the progresses of science and technology were a unified historical process.The second part described the promoting role which all-round development played in science and technology. All-round development is the highest need and is also a powerful impetus for science and technology. Human capacity is base of the progress of science and technology which must be converted to reality through human. Therefore, the human development level determines the level of technological development. Strong intelligence, thinking ability, values and rational consciousness are important guarantee for the best use of science and technology. Only the continuous development of human can ensure the proper use of scientific and technological achievements.In the third part, the promoting role that science and technology played in human development was discussed from the perspective of the truth, goodness and beauty. Scientific and technological progress prepared material and spiritual conditions for pursuit of the truth and enhanced human's ability. Science and technology has enriched human's relationship, enhanced democracy and civilization, made people tend to act more rationally so that the social relationship became harmonious. Science and technology itself contained elements of beauty which can beautify human mind. The progress of science and technology also prepared necessary conditions for the creation and expression of beauty.Science and technology is a double-edged sword. As all-round development is not achieved yet, there exists deviation in the research and application of science and technology. In the fourth part, some negative effects when human made improper use of science and technology were analyzed. Humans wielded the weapon of science and technology, marched to nature eagerly and caused great environmental pollution and resources shortage, destroyed the harmony between human and nature. The progress of science and technology narrowed the distance between people, but made people more remote and lack in understanding, trust and care. Regarding economic value of science and technology as important, human meanings, value and spiritual needs were ignored. Materials had been greatly satisfied, but humans lost their spiritual home.In the final part, on the dialectical basis of scientific and technological progress and all-round development, the way of making science and technology and all-round development harmonious was illustrated. To obtain correct views of negative impacts produced by science and technology, we can not simply blame it to science and technology. We must find reasons from ourselves. Establish a sound mechanism for scientific and technical evaluation, risk assessment and decision-making mechanisms, and enhance moral sense and responsibility of scientific and technological workers. Change concepts of development, guide development with scientific development views, and make the human-oriented values throughout scientific and technological activities.
