Modal Adverbs differ greatly from other adverbs. There are individual characteristic in the respects of semantic meaning, syntactic function and pragmatic competence contrast to other adverbs. The subject investigated in this paper is the Modal Adverbs which have the meaning of "sum up." The adverbs "zhongyu" "zongsuan" "zonggui" are chosen to be as examples. The paper is composed of four parts besides the introduction and the summary.The first part, we make a semantic analysis of "zhongyu" "zongsuan" and "zonggui" Through the analysis of dictionary interpretation, their semantic structure are concluded. And then we induce the semantemes of "zhongyu" "zongsuan" and "zonggui" through many example sentences.The second part, the paper describes the position and distribution of "zhongyu" "zongsuan" and "zonggui". We study the sentences which include "zhongyu" "zongsuan" and "zonggui" from sentential forms and syntax categories.The third part, the paper describes their co-occurrence and collocation with other words. First, we study the co-occurrence with other kinds of particles, for example of the dynamic auxiliary, mood particle, "是"and the conjunction, etc. Then we study the collocation with the other Modal Adverbs. In addition, we analyze the rules of co-occurrence and collocation.Finally, we study their pragmatic and textual functions. In this part, we first investigate their pragmatic functions, then we study the way and function of their coherence.
