As an independent part of speech, the Chinese adjective has been well recognized in the grammar field, but it belongs to the category, which is rich in content, complex in grammatical functions. As for whether the Chinese adjective can be followed by an object and to what part of speech it belongs after being followed by an object, there are different arguments in the grammar field.By comparing and analyzing the Chinese structure "A+the(了)+O" synchronically and diachronically, the thesis can reflect the situation of Chinese adjectives followed by objects, and through the systematic and objective analysis for this structure from the levels of grammar, semantics and pragmatics, the thesis aims to probe into the internal mechanism of its formation and selection.In the first chapter, this thesis reviews the achievements of previous researches, and then identifies the scope of the investigation of the thesis. The second chapter discusses the origin of the structure "A+the(了)+O ". The third chapter analyzes the formation categories of the structure "A+the(了)+O " through the analysis for the formation categories of "A"(monosyllabic and disyllabic) and "O’\The fourth chapter analyzes the semantic features of "A" and "O" in the structure "A+the(了)+O”,and does the further analysis for the choices of the following "O" according to the semantic valence of the "A". In the last chapter, the thesis discusses the syntactic functions of the structure "A+the(了)+O”respectively as predicates, adverbials and complements, and also the pragmatic meanings of this structure based on the cognitive metaphors and the economic principles of language.Through the objective descriptive analysis for the structure "A+the(了)+O", the thesis gains a comprehensive cognition about its semantic, grammar, pragmatic, also it forms some preliminary opinions of the author, and remains open to discussion and be confirmed by further researches.
