Phonological awareness is one of the most important research topics in recent years.A large number of experimental results show that phonological awareness plays an important role in the acquisition and development of children's reading and spelling ability.With a detailed study, the relationships among phonological awareness and learning new words,the growth of vocabularies, and the intervention research of phonological awareness have been received more attention. In this study, Chinese students were tested to examine the role of English phonological awareness intervention on verbal short-term memory and words spelling in English vocabularies learning in primary school.In this study includes three experiments, (1)In study 1, Chinese children were tested to investigate the development of English phonological awarenss,the relationship between English phonological awareness and English achievement.(2)In study 2,we explored the relationship between English phonological awarenss and verbal short-term memory and words spelling of primary students.(3)In study 3,we investigated the validity of English phonological awareness intervention to improve the English phonological awareness,verbal short-term memory and words spelling for primary students.This study results show:1. There was significant positive correlation between English achievement of students and English phonological awareness total scores ,the components of English phonological awareness.2. Children's phonological awareness was improved with grades.The awareness of rhyme,initial phoneme recognition and phoneme location were obviously developed ,while phoneme count had got slow development.3. There was no significant differences in gender, no significance in the interactions between grades and gender for English phonological awareness of children. 4. There was significant positive correlation between phonological awareness and true and false words spelling,true and false words verbal short-term memory.The group with high levels of English phonological awareness performanced more excellently than the group with low levels in verbal short-term memory task. There was no interactions between grades and the levels of English phonological awareness in verbal short-term memory task.While there was significant interactions between grades and the levels of phonological awareness in true and false words spelling.The levels of phonologica awareness could affect English knowledge learning ,and these two factors both had an effect on words spelling.5. English Phonological awareness intervention not noly improves the level of English phonological awareness of students,but also promotes the achievement of verbal short-term memory and words spelling.
