Shuowenjiezi was the first dictionary arranged according to radicals in Chinese history, which saved the ancient people's thinking and the culture at that time. This article choose 181 characters of the radical "yi" as a research object, on the one hand is to hackle the basic of the placenames and classify them, on the other hand is to explain the origin of nameing of part of placenames (51 characters), then summed up the rules of these placenames (9 categories), and finally attempt to reveal the implication of culture(6 classes). According to these studies, it is not only hope to provide some valuable demonstrated materials for Chinese lexicology, but also add some references for perfecting toponymy and Chinese culture. The thesis is mainly constituted by the following parts:Foreword includes a few problems. First, the reasons for writing the study. Shuowen built the internal structure and system of meaning of Chinese characters with basing on font to contact the characters, then saved the ancient people's thought and culture at that time, there are also important reference to other disciplines. Therefore I select the radical "yi" as a study, to provide some valuable materials for Chinese vocabulary, at the same time to offer some reference for the study of toponymy. Second, theory and methods of the research. Mr Wang, Exegetical Principles, summarized the moment theory with the occurrence and accumulation of Chinese vocabulary which is the basis for this article. At the same time, in this paper, I mainly adopt the methods of exegesis summarized by Mr Lu and Wang, in which meaning arrives from sound, font, comparative method and so on. Third, the instructions about " character " and "word". This paper focus on the level of" character ", involving the level of "word". Because the relationship between characters and words are very close, in this article, it does not austerely make the distinction between " character " and "word".Chapterâ… , the overview of administrative divisions and the introduction of administrative units in ancient Chinese. The overview of administrative divisions on ancient Chinese:the administrative division began with Yu times, the earliest distinguish of "Kyushu", and later was evolved as "12 states" through the split. The origin of "Kyushu" was closely related to climate. With the development of history, administrative divisions were becoming more and more detailed, and the jurisdiction range to the county, township, village and so forth. As the ruler of each dynasty was different, there were administrative units following the old system. According to national circumstances, there were the different ones. This part mainly reference the two books:Tongdian written by T'ang Du You and The History Table of Past Dynasties'Geography (volume I) written by Q'ing Chen Fangji. The introduction of administrative units in ancient Chinese:a brief direction of 13 division units appearing in Shuowen, namely: bi,city(du), suburb, ju, county(jun), li, lin, shao, ting, city(yi), county(xian), township and zan. There is its range on the back of each administrative unit.Chapter II, the overview of classification about radical "yi" in Shuowen. There are 181 characters of radical "yi" in Shuowen, and this paper classify the category one by one with the standard of the administrative units. They are divided into 13 categories:administrative units, country (yi), county(jun), county(xian), township, ting, li, ju, mo, kampong, ferry, hill and farther verification. The basis of this classification is the explanation of Shuowen and the remark about Shuowenjiezizhu written by Duan YucaiChapter III, the origin of naming of the placename about radical "yi" in Shuowen. On the section of summary, there is the presentation in the definition of etymology proposed by Yin Jiming in Introduction to Etymology, Mr Wang in Exegetical Principles and my supervisor Liu Xingjun in A Study on Substantives in Zhouli. Then I select 51 characters from the 181 ones of the radical"yi"in Shuowen to a more detailed explanation, trying to research the origin of naming of this placenames. This is the most important and primary part of this thesis.Chapter IV, the rules of naming of the placename about radical "yi" in Shuowen. Primitive men would randomly name for the placenames in order to survive, then to exchange and transmit information to future generations. With the development of civilization and society, there was a certain regularity for the placenames. This reflected people's understanding of the objective world, a certain feeling of the region and the conception of culture of the region. According to the previous research, this chapter summarizes the rules of naming of the placename about radical "yi" in Shuowen, a total of 9 categories:named by the passing country and old city, named by the mountain, named by the river, named by the character or story, named by the terrain, named by the product, named by the symmetry, named by the migration, the reasons of nameing are hidden in the font of the characters and the words.Chapter V, the cultural content was contained in the placenames of radical"yi"in Shuowen. Chinese culture is a unique cultural phenomenon in China. The structure and resultant rules of the characters contain a number of cultural information, reflecting a cultural phenomenon. On the foundation of the above study, this chapter try to reveal the cultural content which contained in the placenames of radical "yi" in Shuowen, that is, the ruler division and bestow the country and the ticy, the surname arrive from the name of city, hierarchy and the exalted-humble system, "the same name have different reality" and " the same reality have different names ", the culture of mountain and river, the culture of migration. That will provide some reference for Chinese cultural studies. The epilogue summarizes the main contents of this paper. In the paper, I only select 51 characters from the 181 ones of the radical "yi" in Shuowen to a more detailed explanation, the other part of the placenames are briefly introduced. I don't do exhaustive research, so it can be studied by further excavation. In the thesis, there are still some statements that are not enough rigorous, errors and omissions.
