The Study On Shandong Placename Characters

Affected by factors such as geography, history and dialect, placenames and its characters exhibit a strong regional feature. The study on regional placename characters is a basic work in this field.Among existing studies of geographical names, there have been a considerable number of regional researches, but the study of its chracters mainly concentrates on the interpretation of specific characters. Taking Shandong Province as an example, this paper is an attempt to the regional study of placename characters.History, geography and dialect are the most direct manifestation of the regional feature, they have a deep reflection on placename characters, especially on the generic name characters.Similar generic name characters gather together, and its distribution reflects the division of the historical district, geo-cultural region and dialect areas.Based on the brief explaination of regional features of Shandong placename characters, this paper studies the generic name characters with historical, geographical, and dialectal features in detail. Due to the limited scope of application, placename characters especially those used in basic level placenames is somewhat arbitrary in its form, sound and meaning, this fields thus has always been a central survival field of "rare characters". The existence of made-up and nonstandard characters resultes in written confusion, standardization of language and palcename standardization work adversely.Based on the study of rare characters in Shandong placenames, the article probes into their written version and naming reason, and then make the appropriate recommendations to its specifications.I hope through inspect these characters used in Shandong placenames thoroughly,we can have a more in-depth understanding in bottom words and the historical, geographical connotation in Shandong Placename characters.
