Nüshu is a unique writing system exclusively used by the women in Shangjiangxu and its neighboring regions of Jiangyong County, Hunan Province. This only-female-used script has tremendous linguistic and social significance and is the priceless resource of linguistics, sociology, and anthropology.This paper approaches Nüshu from linguistic and social-cultural perspectives and arrives at the conclusion that the linguistic features of Nüshu include the frequent use of non-subject sentence, dialect words, metonymy, parallelism, hyperbole, simile, antithesis, etc. and non-linguistic-cohesion sentence.This paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to the objective and research method of the thesis. The second chapter is the review of research on Nüshu, offering an introduction to recent development in this field, the relationship between language and culture, the relationship between language and society, and the relationship between genders. The third chapter serves as a detailed analysis of the Nüshu literature, focusing on the linguistic features of Nüshu: the constant application of non-subject sentence, dialect words, metonymy, parallelism, hyperbole, simile, antithesis, etc. and non-linguistic-cohesion sentence. The fourth chapter is the analysis of Nüshu from the social-cultural perspective. The last chapter is the conclusion, claiming that Nüshu is an indispensable means for women to express and vent their feelings and emotions and a manifestation of pursuing knowledge and social equality.
