Roland Barthes, as a famous contemporary French philosopher and literary theorist, is one of the structure movement representatives, and he is recognized as the founder of French semiology and the New Culture Critical Movement. Barthes'thought of the semiology permeates his whole theory, and the research on his semiology is the key to understand the idea of Barthes. Based on the inheritance and development of Saussure language structure semiotics, Barthes combined structuralism with semiology, using the methods of structuralism to establish the semiotic system. Moreover, Barthes applied the theory and methods of structural semiotics to other's symbolic system, the point of which is to analyze the cultural implication behind the symbols by using the symbolic signification system. Therefore, these theories can be studied from following several aspects:First, it is the introduction. In this part, the thesis discusses the importance of Barthes'semiology and the newest studies of China and abroad to find the essence of Barthes's thought. That is, how did Barthes apply the theory and methods of structural semiotics to analyze the cultural implication behind the symbols? The second part is Barthes'semiology theory. Bart expounded the semiotic theory in his "Principles of symbols". He divided it into four aspects: langue and parole, the signified and the signifier, system and combination, denotation and connotation, each of which a binary opposite structure has emerged as a symbol of binary opposite structure. Therefore, Barthes combined structuralism with semiology, using the methods of structuralism to establish the semiotic system. In Barthes'semiology, a symbol is essentially a system of signification, that is, the symbolic meaning and the relationship between meanings. And the signification system is a multi-structure system, which is Barthes's contribution to the theory of semiotics. The third part focuses on the cultural analysis of Barthes'semiology. Based on his change in thought of structuralism Barthes structuralism semiology can be divied into two phases: structuralism and deconstruction. In the early phase of structuralism, Barthes used structural methods to build semiotic system, analyze signification of semiology, and thus animadvert on the bourgeois who transferred his cultural into universal existence. In the interim from the structuralism to deconstruction, Barthes tried to build scientific theory of semiology by using the methods of structuralism semiology, and applied the theory to the field of costume. His analysis on costume showed that all aspects of society can be connected with semiology. To analyze the signification of these symbols means to unscramble the cultural implication behind the symbols. That is, from the cultural implication the whole society reveals true colors. In the period of deconstruction, Barthes no longer built a scientific semiotic theory, but directly use the main method of semiotic theory to practice in "text". And he deconstructs a complete "text" into individual symbols or segments to make it produce structural function. The final part is about cultural criticism and social value of Barthes semiology. In the entire process from structuralism to deconstruction, Barthes always emphasized the application of semiotic signification to other fields, in order to reveal the culture behind it, which is the real value of studying signification. The research on the symbol of all fields is in fact the research on functions of cultural implication in all fields, accordingly criticize in-depth the culture reflecting the ruling class ideology and the unreasonable part of Western culture. In the meanwhile, the trend of globalization, new things are constantly generated, and these new things as a variety of the symbol come into our native culture. Barthes semiotic theory and method structure provided some reasonable way for our analysis of these symbols. And his theory gives some inspiration to the solution to the symbolic alienation.
