For a long time, the image of African Americans, especially when as slaves, has been portrayed as good-natured and obedient coward. However, the truth is that, through the historical events and records, African Americans, even as slaves, have always been carrying a spirit of manhood. It is not difficult to discover African American people's manhood in their revolt, liberation movement and the later civil rights movement. However, African American manhood can also be found in their Christianity.Black Christianity is a version used to differentiate from white Christianity. The Christianization of African Americans was a natural process in the context of American sociey, and was also as a result of black people's own need. In spite of such a close relationship with white Christianity, Black Christianity in many aspects manifests its own particularities, which in this thesis is concluded as the maintenance of Africanism, and its survival, elevation, liberation traditons. The particular attributes of Black Christianity is not only a reflection of African Americans'never fading self-consciousness and independence spirit—receiving Christianity from the whites selectively and creatively, but also the process of defending this particularities manifests African American people's manhood, which is usually ignored.
