This dissertation analyzed the English Olympic song lyrics and Chinese ones in light of mood system and its realization of interpersonal meanings/function. The song lyrics share the characteristics of both written and spoken language. They can be treated as the special texts which are created for the purposes of singing. There are different genres of songs which are created for special purposes, such as patriotism songs to show the love to the country. However, Olympic song is one of those special genres. To some extent, it shows the characteristics of one decade for both language and culture. Through the analysis on those two kinds of lyric text, we can see how people (both in English speaking country and China) use mood system to express their love, enthusiasm, passion and expectation and what the differences are when they organize their language. And also this analysis gave aspirations to lyric writers on how to create lyrics towards the great event for the further implications. The investigation of mood system and its interpersonal meaning realization in this thesis made use of two-level analysis both in English Olympic song lyrics and Chinese song lyrics: syntactic and lexical. Both of them were analyzed in clause unit. At syntactic level, the use of declarative, interrogative and imperative patterns were analyzed. At lexical level, the frequency of modal operators, mood adjuncts and comment adjuncts were explored. In Chinese, we used different concepts like functional words but they have the same function with the modal operators, mood adjuncts and comment adjuncts in English. Further explanations were done on the implication of the mood systems and its realization of interpersonal function. Because of the limitation of time and competence, there are some limitations of the study which still need further research. |
