Cooperative learning is first advocated and carried out by American educator. It became a creative and effective teaching theory and strategy in 1970s. There has been a growing consensus among researchers about the positive effects of cooperative learning on students'achievements as well as social affective aspects.Based on the literary review at home and abroad, the author thinks CL is not only a kind of teaching strategy but a kind learning method and attitude of living. The application of this teaching approach can develop students' competence of language use. The method, based on students' learning interest, life experience, creates more opportunities of practice, involvement, cooperation and communication for students, develops their positive affection, facilitates their active thinking and practice and improves their cross-cultural awareness and their autonomous learning. CL can make up for the inefficiency of traditional English teaching practice. It encourages the interaction and reception between peers. It emphasizes the mutual effort and promotion in learning language. And CL conforms to the subject characteristics of English practice.This thesis will discuss the CL in English teaching practice.It intends to explore the collaborative English instructional design in college drew from traits of children psychological development, and the basic principles and demands of English teaching; The paper tries to combine theory with practice, and not only delves into the concept of collaborative learning and its application on English instructional design for college, but also makes predictable, applicable systematic design and arrangement on the structure and instructional stages of collaborative classroom English instruction in college.
