Address forms are a major part of language and are affected by a country's culture and society. Understanding when, where and how to use these address terms is very important and essential when translating them from one language to another. This thesis focuses on the terms of address used in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, one of the four major Chinese masterpieces, and then discusses the difficulties in translating the address forms from Chinese to English.This paper includes three main sections. The first two chapters introduce the use and importance of address terms and the goal of this paper. The middle chapters discuss the methods of research employed to analyze the Chinese and their respective Englisn terms utilized in the first 30 chapters to address the characters Cao Cao, Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei. Through this ending chapters analysis and comparison of address terms in both languages a discussion of the distinguishing features and difficulties of the translation of address terms will be presented.
