Zhang Ailing novel's had deeply humane meaning and distinctive artistic style. Through her detailed description of the traditional family living in the city, she unearthed the profound conflict between modern Civilization and Chinese feudal culture, which showing selfishness of human nature and the absurdity of life. Besides, Zhang Ailing's aesthetic taste was influenced by a deep foundation in traditional Chinese literature as well as modern fiction literacy training.
