This thesis aims at interpreting the meanings of visual images in news reports through the analysis of visual images in the 16th GZ Asian Games news reports. In contemporary society, along with the development of communication technology, discourses are gradually taking on the features of multimodality, which is especially obvious in multimedia discourses. Multimodal discourses refer to the discourses in which language and other semiotic resources coexist to construct meanings. These semiotic resources, besides language, also include visual images, sound, colors, etc, which coexist in media discourses and complete meaning construction. News reports are one kind of these multimodal discourses, for in contemporary society news reports usually consist of linguistic texts and visual images. Therefore, to thoroughly understand the meanings of a news report, we should not only focus on the linguistic level but also try to explore the meanings hidden behind the visual images.By adopting Kress and van Leeuwen's (1996) theory of visual grammar (VG henceforth) as the analytical framework, this thesis tries to discuss the representational meaning, interactive meaning and compositional meaning of visual images in the 16th GZ Asian Games news reports, and to reveal how GZ, as the host city of the 16th Asian Games, demonstrates its harmonious image to the world in these news reports so as to justify its host role.
