Predicate transformation-reference refers to the phenomenon of such predicate components as verbs, adjectives, and their phrases refer to men or things related to them in meaning and act as nominal components in the grammatical function, predicative transformation-reference was divided into two categories: the lexicalized transformation-reference and the grammaticalized transformation-reference. The phenomena of the transformation-reference of Chinese predicate are very common in the pre-Qin period. Their research, especially the research of grammaticalized transformation-reference, is conducive to the research on the characteristics of Chinese semantics and grammar in the pre-Qin period. This thesis, on the basis of the research of the predecessors, analyzes the phenomenon of predicative transformation-reference in the major books and records of the pre-Qin period and summarizes the characteristics of predicative transformation-reference so as to gain an relatively comprehensive understanding of the phenomena of the transformation-reference of Chinese predicate in the pre-Qin period and be of help to further research. This thesis contains six chapters:Chapter I Introduction. This chapter contains four sections: Section 1 explains the significance of choosing the research theme of"the transformation-reference of Chinese predicate in the pre-Qin period";Section 2 presents the current research condition of the chosen theme ; Section 3 lists the research purpose of this thesis; and Section 4 is the source of corpus. Chapter II Survey of the Transformation-Reference of Chinese Predicate in the Pre-Qin Period. This chapter mainly discusses the definition of predicative transformation-reference, the classification of predicative transformation-reference. First, we survey"nominalization", which is closely related to the transformation-reference of predicate, and based on the research of Guo Rui, expresses the author's view of"the transformation-reference of predicate", the author believes that the transformation-reference of predicate refers to the phenomenon of verbs of action, verb phrases, adjectives of property and state, and adjective phrases refer to men or things related to action, property, and state in meaning and act as nominal components in grammatical function. Secondly, we divide predicative transformation-reference into two categories: one is the lexicalized transformation-reference and the other is the grammaticalized transformation-reference. Secondly, we discussed the relationship between the nominalization and Predicative Transformation-reference. Besides, this section gives a brief description of lexicalized transformation-reference and points out that main part of this thesis is the grammaticalized transformation-reference. Thirdly, we counts and analyzes the examples of predicative transformation-reference in the major books and records of the pre-Qin period and summarizes the four structures occurring in the transformation-reference of predicate, i.e. parallel structure, symmetry structure, subject position, and object position.Chapter III Transformation-Reference of Predicate in the Parallel Structure. When several predicate components occur in the parallel structure, grammaticalized transformation-reference will take place. It can be divided into two categories, which are predicate acts as subject in parallel and predicate act as object in parallel.Chapter IV Transformation-Reference of Predicate in the Symmetry Structure. Symmetry structure includes sentences containing two or more phrases or clauses with similar number of characters, same grammatical structure, and opposite or related meaning. When predicate components occur in the symmetry structure, grammaticalized transformation-reference will take place. It can be divided into the symmetry between subject and subject, subject and object, and object and object.Chapter V Transformation-Reference of Predicate in the Position of Subject and Object. When predicate components occur in the position of subjects and objects, grammaticalized transformation-reference can also take place. It can be divided into two subcategories: one is the predicate component acts as the object of the predicative verb; the other is the predicate component acts as the object of the preposition.Chapter VI Conclusion. This Chapter is the end of this thesis. It summarizes the characteristics of Chinese transformation-reference in the pre-Qin period and points out the trend of predicative transformation-reference after the Han Dynasty. With the development of the language, syntax becomes more and more elaborate and the phenomenon of predicative transformation-reference, gradually replaced by the structure of"zhe(者)", that of"suo(所)", or the specific nominal component, becomes less and less common after the Han Dynasty.
