During the Renaissance, self-portrait, also called "the portrait in the mirror" is a particular artistic expression through which passions can be gotten off the chest and the character of the painter can be shown. Every artist has his own way of expressing himself and self-portrait is one of the ways to have soul communications with the artist. With the enriching of the network resources, the artistic expressions gradually become diversified, at the same time manifold western artistic expressions and drawing languages are more acceptable. In this way we are given more freedom to ingrate our inspiration to the works. On the other hand, self-portrait make the artist express themselves more freely.Because self-portrait is an artistic form without others'interferences and it can not only convey the passion in ones deep heart but also show the self in the mirror with his own unique traits. Hence, by the time self-portrait being influenced by the era, it endows artists a precious way to create their works.Back to the period of time after the Industrial Revolution of Europe, the self-portraits of many foreign artists underwent tremendous changes both in theme and form. Speaking of this we have to talk about some famous artist like VanGogh, Dali, Picasso who all have there unique features. Dali shows his inner self through the clock; VanGogh depicts his deep impulse with passionate color;Picasso manifests his endless creative power with various forms of drawing;and the contemporary artists reveal inward yearnings by aftertasting details in lives or fluctuating emotions. The objects in the picture are the ups and downs in these artists' way of pursuing art which have been simplified in to signs.With hundreds of years of history, oil painting has a significant position in China .As a artistic expression of the oil painting, self portrait has long been a platform for the artists to communicate with themselves. Through the ages from the arising of the self portrait till now, it has been an artistic expression favored by many artists. A great many of artists draw self portrait to let out their emotions, describe the circumstance they in and deliver their feelings. when study the portrait,we have to started with the psychology of the artist, try to understand the inner status of his during that period of times. The picture he drawn is not just his self appearance in the mirror but a release of inner passion and a voiceless communication with himself. In the history of art, the works with the theme of self portrait will continual come out, which shows that the self appealing and self expressing will never stop. New ways of expression must appear and more new various "self" will keep on shock our sights and hearts.It is the artists' rights and the audiences' rights to distinguish whether the one in the picture is me or "me".
