Reading is the main way for many Chinese students to touch the language of English due to the lack of language environment. It is important to cultivate students'reading skills so that it can improve their ability of autonomous reading. For the students of non-English major in non-key universities, one of the important goals for them is to learn English well and pass CET4/ 6 for the severe employment situation currently. However, the English courses are taught as intensive reading in most middle schools which leads to the fact that most freshmen are so poor at reading comprehension. Thus, more importance should be attached to such issue.This study began with the questionnaire survey to investigate the situation of students'English reading habits and the circumstance in which they are using the reading strategies. Then, an experimental study was made on English reading strategies training. The data are statistically analyzed with Statistical Package for Social Sciences ( SPSS11.5). At the same time, qualitative methods are used to analyze and examine the influence of reading strategies training on the reading efficiency. That is, two interviews were arranged before and after the experiment. The pre-interview is to learn about students'using circumstance of reading strategies and the existing problems in reading before the experiment. While the post-interview is to obtain more feedback from students about the training of English reading strategies after the experiment, so that we can examine further for the effect of the training and the influence it brings. In general, this thesis is a study that consists of both quantitative and qualitative methods, both theory and practice methods.The following conclusions are drawn from the study:1. Currently, the main problem is English reading strategies can't be taught statistically and be trained effectively, so that the students feel them abstract and difficult to use.2. Most students of non-English major still have many bad habits in the process of English reading. The main reason may come from the influence of the intensive reading teaching that is almost just the only way in English reading teaching in middle school.3. The non-English majors cannot use reading strategies as expected. Most students know little about English reading strategies and lack the ability of using reading strategies flexibility.4. In the process of using strategies, students use meta-cognitive strategies least in English reading. Most students are lack of self-management and monitoring in their study. Therefore, their ability of autonomous learning isn't well enough.5. The training of English reading strategies, even just the short-time training, can change students'reading belief effectively and improve their consciousness of using strategies.6. The training of English reading strategies can help the students improve their reading results to some extent, but the effect isn't so obvious. It shows that a more effective and statistical training needs a long-time planning.7. The effective training of English reading strategies can stimulate students'interesting in learning English and strengthen their confidence of using strategies. According to the results of this study, some pedagogical implications are present in the ending of the thesis and some tentative suggestions are made concerning the training of English reading strategies. Finally, the author points out the limitations of this study and gives recommendations for further researches on the field.
