The Fair Maid of the Mill ("Die schone Mullerin"),as the classical model of the romantic song cycles, is one of the most melancholy and touching works in the history of the piano divertimento. In the work, Franz Schubert poured out all of his emotions, making it an extremely enchanting melody brimming with indescribable romance and melancholy. With its dramatic chants sometimes and monologues full of despair and helplessness other times, a unique artistic mood and delicate sensibility are brought to a natural and perfect display in this melody. As a semi-autobiographical piano cycle, The Fair Maid of the Mill is one of the most representative of Schubert's works, which serves more as a summary of his artistic creations. The essay is dedicated to an in-depth analysis of its music image of the protagonist from two aspects, i.e. ideological content and music language, with the purpose to decode its hidden emotions and social significance. In addition, the essay also tackles the songs one by one with appropriate details, aiming to reveal vividly the musical layout of the musical image in each tune.
