| News plays an important role in people's daily life. It is the spreading of information about what is happening at home or abroad. Likewise, news English plays the same role as news. And as English is more popular, many English learners begin to read English papers to study English. However, news English, as an English variety, has its unique features. In order to understand news English efficiently and accurately, it is necessary to get a picture of news English.Different from the traditional stylistic analysis, the thesis is the analysis of cohesion in the English news texts in terms of Halliday & Hasan's cohesion theory, in order to gain an insight into the texture of the English news texts.Through the analysis the author comes to a conclusion of cohesive features in the English news texts from four aspects of reference, ellipsis and substitution, conjunction, and lexical cohesion. Lexical cohesion constitutes the biggest proportion, and among which, repetition is the most striking feature, used most in the texts; synonyms and collocation are similar in proportion, less than repetition; the general word are used very few. Reference composes the second bigger proportion. Personal and demonstrative references are used more than comparative reference never used in these three news English texts. Conjunction is the third one in proportion. As we know, English news texts are characteristic of the short paragraph with one sentence in majority, consequently, the explicit conjunctive items are used little. Ellipsis and substitution are the least employed and sometimes do not occur. Apart from these, it is necessary to mention that some cohesive relations are in the adjacent sentences and some in the separate sentences.Through the understanding of the cohesion in the English news texts, it is helpful for English learners to read news English deeply, and to improve their reading skills and strengthen their sense of cohesion in the writing.
