This paper is intended to explore the complicated application of cohesive ties and chains of Chinese College Students' English writing. Facing the writing task, with the exception of the lexical cohesion, many students feel completely puzzled about employing any other way to apply the coherent means in their writing. However, in addition to the lexical cohesion, other categories of cohesion, as identified by Halliday and Hasan (1976), should also be used frequently in our English writing. Cohesive chains (a series of lexical collocations, reiterations, and their reference pronouns all semantically related to one another) should also, even with significant differences in use, be resorted to in writing. This thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter one: General remark on what is cohesion, providing an insight into the basic theory on coherence; Chapter Two: How to keep the cohesive ties in English writing, extending a talk on a great variety of the means of how to keep an essay coherent; Chapter Three: The current state of the application of cohesive ties and chains in College students' English writing, displaying the current state of Chinese College students' using the means of cohesion in their writing; Chapter four: Causes of the status quo, presenting a detailed analysis of the various causes resulting such a state; Chapter five: Suggestions and Conclusion, extending and finalizing the contention that what we should do is to abandon the old way of grammatical teaching method in classroom teaching activities, and to advocate the communicative teaching approach for the purpose of arousing students' positive capacity of thinking on their own and thinking from the overall viewpoint of discourse analysis when involved in the actual process of writing. Chapter six: My Personal Way of Teaching English Writing in Connection With the Teaching of Intensive Reading, giving a detailed description of my own experiences on the teaching of writing.
