Since China has adopted the Open Door Policy in 1978, Hong Kong has been playing as a significant intermediary in the economic interflow between China and other countries. The prime role that Hong Kong played in Sino-Japanese economic interchange is a typical example. A research on the Hong Kong's intermediary role in Sino-Japanese economic interchange has both academic and practical effects. In the first place, it is beneficial to future research on Sino-Japanese economic interchange. Furthermore, it helps promoting the modernization of our economy.It is an attempt of this dissertation to provide a systematic account of China's intermediary effect in Sino-Japanese interchange by making use of voluminous Chinese and English material. The first section is an analysis on the reasons why China needs an intermediary in her economic interflow with other countries. The second part describes the conditions favourable to Hong Kong's development as an intermediary in Sino-Japanese economic interflow. The third part further discusses on the overall performance of Hong Kong as an intermediary of Sino-Japanese economic interflow. The main focus of the fourth section will be shifted to the positive effects of Hong Kong's intermediary role in the development of economy in China and Hong Kong. Last but not least, a conclusion on the whole dissertation will highlight Hong Kong's continuing importance in Sino-Japanese economy interflow after China's entry into WTO. Nevertheless, Hong Kong's intermediary role will experience some changes in different scopes.
