Great changes have taken place on the social structure with the economy developing fast since our country adopted the reforming and opening policy. Now the social structure has turned from the former so-called "Two classes and a stratum"梩he working class x the peasantry and the intellectual stratum?into a complicated and diverse social structure. When the social structure has undergone a period of annexing, the middle class in our country is coming into shape gradually while developing quickly. In fact, it's the inevitable result of our country's modernization that the quantity of the middle class in our country is becoming bigger and bigger. The accumulation of the wealth and the rationalization of the rules and regulations will make it possible that the achievement of the social progress is shared by the most people in the society, so that most people of different classes can become commonly wealthy. China's joining the WTO will catalyze the development of the middle class in our country on some extent, shorten the time during which the middle class become the majority in the society, and impel the middle class to make progress on distribution in the whole country, quality, quantity and class' consciousness, etc. But on the other hand, we should also realize that the catalysis on the development of the middle class from China's joining the WTO is spontaneous, which will exert negative affect at the same time when it exerts positive affect. In order to meet the demand of the development of the economy, our government should adopt the. positive policies to guide and cultivate the forming of the modern and rational social structure so that the middle class can certainly become the majority in the society and the whole country can develop in a steady and harmonious way.
