Juewu, the most progressive supplement attached to Daily of the Republic (in Shanghai) in the charge of the KMT, was established in Junel6,1919 with Shao Lizi being its chief editor and Chen Wang-dao vice- editor. When the May4 Movement in China made further progress, many kinds of thoughts conflicted with each other and Marxism increasingly developed to the dominant ideology. Under this background, Juewu was bom with preliminary socialism tendency. Then, under the direct influence of the Communist Group in Shanghai, it developed quickly an important position disseminating Marxism by early Chinese Marxists. Because of its long history, large circulation, widely influence and stationing in Shanghai, the center of Labour Movement, as far as the dissemination of Marxism and introduction of Russian Socialism Revolution were concerned, Juewu was a periodical which had greater effect except for the New Youth at that time. Therefore it was listed as one of "three nationwide supplements" in the period of May4 Movement. After it was set up, Juewu paid close attention to China' s social problems, made an endeavour to give publicity to Marxism, took an active part in fighting against anti - Marxism thoughts and made great contributions to the dissemination of Marxism in China as follows. The main contents about Marxism which Juewu disseminated were: the basic principles of historical materialism, the basic thoughts of scientific socialism and the basic experience of Russian Socialism Revolution in October. In the course of spreading Marxism, Juewu had its own characteristics. It "greedily "assimilated nutrition of Marxism mainly by way of Japan and Chinese students studying there; it willingly accepted the remoulding from the Communist Group in Shanghai and became a special product in special era;it took ordinary youth as the object of inculcation, set up a .special column to pour out young people's heart and became their bosom friend.Following times' tendency, regarding waking the public as its own obligation, Jueivu exerted its strength to propagandize Marxism and played an important role in the history of spreading Marxism in China. It was not only another important position used to disseminate Marxism and fight against anti - Marxism thoughts by early Chinese Marxists in Shanghai, but also the outstanding model of giving publicity to Marxism among similar periodicals dominated by the KMT.
