To instill scientific socialism, the Party's line, general and specific policies into the vast working class and laboring people, and to make it a guideline of the masses is one of the most cardinal principles of Marxism as well as the fine tradition of the Party's ideological and political education. With the fast changing of both the domestic and the international situations, a tendency of ignoring instillation in the ideological and political work has emerged, which quite a number of people hold the idea that instillation education has been out-of -date for, under the market economy, the concepts of self-consciousness and equality should be advocated, and everybody can be self-independent; furthermore, even some veteran comrades who held firmly to the importance of ideological and political work don't think instillationis a recommendable way of education. In the view of the existing various opinions on instillation and the consequences thereafter, this paper, with theoretical and practical pondering over instillation education, points out how important it is to improve the people's realization on sticking to this education under the socialist market economy, and what a significance it is on reforming ideological and political work and raising efficiency of ideological and political education.This paper is composed of four parts. In the first part, after a historical inspect on the implications of instillation education, the author thinks that it is, firstly, an educational principle and approach through which the proletarian vanguards convey the ideological system of Marxism and Communism to the proletarian and the masses for the purpose of arming their mind, improving their consciousness and bettering their quality; secondly, a key part of the Marxist scientific theories whose basic functions are education, publicity, influence, nurture, instillation and enriching; thirdly, from the goal and task of ideological and political work, principle; and compared with the ways of self-study and teaching for pleasure of ideological andpolitical education, a teaching method. So instillation education is both a principle and a concrete method of ideological and political education. In the second part, the author discusses the realistic foundations of instillation education from the aspects of its historical experience, philosophical basis, the struggle in ideological and theoretical battle lines, economic function and political socialization etc. In the third part, the author mainly criticizes the wrong theories of, existed in the process of instillation education, denying instillation, thinking it useless, regarding it out-of-date, taking it as "cramming by force" or "stiff cram", and separating its principle from method etc. In the fourth part, this paper analyses how to improve the efficiency of instillation education under the new situations from three aspects. Firstly, it points out a general principle: Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zhedong thoughts, Deng Xiaoping theories and the important thought of Three Represents should all along be taken as a guideline. Secondly, the four kinds of relationship should be properly dealt with: the relationship of subject and object, of instillation and dredge, of instillation education and self-education, ideology and entertainment. Lastly, to grasp five elements of instillation education: its soul and prerequisite (namely its content), the main factors of its efficiency (subject), its basic goal (object), the guarantee of carrying out it effectively (method), and the crux of carrying out it effectively (networks).
