Application date: June,2004.The thesis is about the vegetable production development in Hezhou Municipality, Guangxi Zhuang Nationality Autonomous Region. The author try to identify the characteristics of the status, strong points and weakness in the vegetable production system through the survey to farmers and related institutions based on PRA method, consequently to find out the opportunities for further development and gave some recommendation on it. The purposes of this research is to provide a deepen understanding on the vegetable production development in Hezhou Municipality. It is hoped that policy makers and managers who work in government institutions will benefit from the outcome of this research and take measures to promote the vegetable development in practice. The conclusions of the paper are as follows based on the survey:1. The natural condition is good for vegetable production in Hezhou and it is becoming one of the major industries for economic development in the area and a major source of income generation for farmers. However. On the other hand, the farmers reduced the planting area of vegetable production in recent years;2. The system of vegetable processing, marketing and social service has basically been established in the area but it is not well functioning;3. The constraints of the vegetable production are as follows based on the survey: (1) insecurity of production quality; (2) capability of processing and marketing is weak; (3) poor skills of enterprise management; (4) not well function in social service system and (5) lack of rationalization in production structure. The insecurity of production quality is the major constraint for vegetable production development in Hezhou;4. The major reason of the major constraint is that the farmers lack of awareness of improving production quality and IPM knowledge;5. The key measures for promoting vegetable production development in Hezhou are (1) to increase inputs; (2) to strengthening extension activities of IPM program; (3) to promoting standardization production and develop no pollution vegetable production in order to improve production reputation in the market.Some recommendations are put forward for government administration at end of the paper and hopefully to provide a reference for the local government and related institutions for sustainable development of vegetable production in Hezhou in the future.
