Knowledge economy is a trend of the development of market economy at the current stage. With the arrival of an era of knowledge economy, the knowledge industry including such trades as software, education and consultation has seen rapid growth. As the knowledge industry takes an increasingly high proportion in GDP, correctly understanding the characteristics of this rising industry and keeping abreast of the law of its development are of significant importance for the entire socioeconomic development. The knowledge industry is greatly different from the traditional industry and agriculture for the particularity of the knowledge industry. Since most of the traditional marketing theories have been produced in the environment where agricultural economy and industrial economy are the mainstay of society, such theories are unsuitable for the rising knowledge industry in many aspects. Therefore, seeking marketing theories suitable for studies on the knowledge industry is common concern in the academic circles and the business circles. The topic of this thesis has been selected just under such a premise. This thesis mainly studies the characteristics of the knowledge industry and its differences from the traditional trades. On this basis, the application of Porter's competition model to the structure of competition in the knowledge industry is studied. During the research, the parts where Porter's model is unsuitable for the structure of competition in the knowledge industry are found out and the model is correspondingly adjusted and modified. At the same time, according to the knowledge industry's characteristics, some special factors that should be taken into account in studying the structure of competition in the knowledge industry are supplemented to the model. Finally, a modified Porter's competition model specifically used for studying the structure of competition in the knowledge industry is formed. This thesis mainly adopts the method of factor analysis. First, the knowledge industry's characteristics are studied; on this basis, the factors constituting the environment of competition in the knowledge industry are identified; then the opportunities and threats that may be brought about by the development and change of such factors to enterprises are analyzed; and finally, the relevant factors affecting the change of the structure of competition in the knowledge industry are found out. In the first chapter, the author mainly expounds the significance of the topic selected for this thesis and scans the domestic and foreign theoretical studies on the knowledge industry. On the basis of confirming that the topic selected has not been fully studied in domestic and foreign academic and theoretical circles, the author puts forth the purpose of this thesis and the scope and method of research and plans the structure of the whole thesis. In the second chapter, the author clarifies the definition of knowledge industry, the relevant trades related to the knowledge industry at present and the classification of such trades first. Then the author expounds in a detailed way the core of the knowledge industry—the characteristics of knowledge products and the current characteristics of competition in the knowledge industry, thereby laying a foundation for research in the next chapter. The third chapter is the focus of this thesis. On the basis of determining the objective of this thesis is to tackle the problem of studies on the structure of competition in the knowledge industry, this author analyzes the relevant theories about competition research in the academic circles and finally select Porter's model as the theoretical basis of research. The author also expounds the principle and the method of Porter's model in details. After fully studying Porter's model, the author applies the model to the knowledge industry for practical application. In the process of application, it's discovered that some structural factors set forth in the original model are not suitable for the knowledge industry; some characte...
