Predecessors have devoted much academic endeavor to the research of the Confucian Thought of Rule of Virtue (CTRV). However, most discussions mixed up CTRVs around pre-Qin period and failed to offer concrete analyses of pre-Qin CTRV that represents the essence of CRTV. Further research of pre-Qin CTRV discloses that it is embodied by the combined thoughts of Confucius, Mencius and Xunzi. Tracing its development, I argue that there is no necessary relation between Rule of Virtue and Rule by Men and the former is not indispensably affiliated to feudal autocracy. Although pre-Qin CTRV relies on feudal autocratic society, it still takes on a new significance transcending that society. Unfortunately, this significance was suffocated due to incompatibility with feudal autocratic rule; hence it exerted no influence of guidance as it should be. But nowadays, it becomes a positive inspiration and reference for our political construction of democracy. In order to acquire a genuine understanding of CTRV and humanism of Confucian philosophers, we have to break through some titular Confucian thoughts imposed by feudal autocracy and further seek humanism from pre-Qin CTRV. Only if we master the true spirit of pre-Qin CTRV, can we obtain a justified remark on the pros and cons of CRTV and its modern value.
