The important reason for restraining the development of Yunnan is impoverishment that the ethnic groups are poverty-stricken as a whole. The rich and unique tourist resources of Yunnan, which exist in mountainous or border area where inhabit a large amount of impoverished ethnic groups need to be developed. Thus Yunnan Province should make a strategic choice of alleviating poverty that is important but difficult problem through how to develop tourism.Many problems need to be settled urgently during the rapid development of tourist resources of Yunnan. So tourist industry of Yunnan must take the way of sustainable development. Ecotourism as one of the patterns of sustainable development is the fastest development tour. How to start up the ecotourism, which puts sustainable development as its object has turned into a merit attention. This article is based on the theoretical and practical research of internal sustainable tourism and ecotourism development results. It puts forward that ecotourism which has positively economic, ecological, social benefits to Yunnan is the effective way of sustainable development of it through comparative studies of the favorable and restrict element of the developing tourist of Yunnan. At the same time the text is further examining the principle, which must be stick to in the ecotourism of distinctive Yunnan features because cultural activities in human society and natural ecological tourist resources determine the ecological tourism. Thus we must put protecting ecological tourist resources as the most important principle. The urban inhabitants are the strongest motive power to protect ecological tourist resources. The important reason why the poverty backward region can't develop sustainably is the vicious circle of poverty and ecological environment on the poverty region of ethnic groups where has centralized the ecological tourist resources of Yunnan. We must consolidate the development of ecological tourism and the aid-the-poor program and implement them through forming a complete set. We must adhere to the principle that the government should play the leading effect for ecotourism and guarantee the urban inhabitants who can benefit from protecting the tourist resources. The government can't exert the leading effect without the support of policy and the investment of funds. It is indispensable to stick to the principle of enjoying the resources and cost together, compensating the resources with payment.In a word, we should direct the ecotourism with the viewpoint of scientifically sustainable development and as it the important but difficult strategy choice to alleviate poverty of Yunnan.
