Since it was put forward in the 1980s', sustainable development has been noticed gradually by different governments and the whole society. The quantitative measurement of sustainable development becomes more and more important with further studies, because the quantitative research to sustainable development not only determines the formulation and implement of policy, but also decides the achievement of sustainable development. At present, the research on the measurable index of sustainable development falls into three types, i.e., the assessment model based on the systematic theories, the assessment model based to currency and the measurement model based on biomes. As a kind of quantitative assessment to biomes, ecological footprint method transform the resources which human need in the social activities and waste into the ecological footprint area, compares to ecological capacity to reveal the balanceable relationship between regional economy system and ecological system, and describes the condition of regional sustainable development. Due to its simple concept and easy to manipulate , the ecological footprint overcomes many shortcoming in other assessment index, such as confused system, complicated calculation, abstract result etc, and it becomes a method which is greatly valued in the quantitative measurement of sustainable development at present. As a comprehensive index, however, the quality of synthesis and generalization of its results are nowadays shocking to wake up the consciousness of sustainable development among the public, but such results also have some defects, for example, they will make political implication general and blurred. So, how to breach the limitation and direct the practices of the regional sustainable development have become the focus of many subjects and the key point to make further studies in the ecological footprint.Geography has it's special perspective to this problem. In view of its research core—man-land relationship regional system theory, the sustainable development of any region depends on the man-land relationship in this area, the regional relation between this region and the others, the links of this region and its inferior region system, its own developing history process and that of others'. So, it needs to study systematically the difference of regional ecological footprint with three scientific research dimensions of geography (spatial sequence, temporal order and dynamic mechanism) as its research frames. Thus, it can deepen the method and theory ofecological footprint, and be good for orientation and optimization on regional sustainable developing strategy at the same time .Following the train of the thought above, basing on a large quantity of date information and analysis on the research achievements, the article makes an initial empirical study on space-time structure of ecological footprint in the special area, Yunnan province. As possible as set up a foundation for building mechanism of regional collaboration and coordination and regional systematic study of structure and function. This article is mainly divided into the following five parts:The first parts: studies in theories and methods of ecological footprint Studying on theories and methods are the start and base of this research . After collecting many status data of relating documents from abroad and home, this article introduces the generating backgrounds, relating concepts, calculating methods and routine, and researching progress about ecological footprint, basing on above introducing the article analyzes the advantages and disadvantages and existing problems of ecological footprint theories. Then, the article presents the paradigm of footprint study from researching core and dimension of geography .setting theoretical basis for the following analysis. The second parts: analyzing footprint and its temporal order in Yunnan province. This part includes four contents:?calculating and analyzing ecological footprint and it's dynamic changes in 1978—2003 .?calculating per capita ecological capacity and comparing with footprint.(3)studying the changing state of ten thousands yuan GDP, diversity and developing ability of ecological footprint.@relation studying between per capita ecological footprint and GDP.The conclusion form the four research ?The per capita ecological footprint take on ascendant trend generally froml978to2003, from 0.621hm2 in 1978 to 1.75 hm2 in 2003, net increase 1.129 hm2, it is reflect the social economic activity of Yunnan impose on ecology environment is expanding, we can see from the ecological footprint component .grasslands and fossil fuel contribute to ecological footprint is outstanding. Compared to the ecological footprint the per capita ecological capacity is decrease year by year, from 1.367 hm2 in 1978 to 0.997 hm2 though the cross section in 1999. Analyzing can conclusion Yunnan province locate at the situation where is region, state unsustainable development and globe sustainable development; ?theresource put into use ration is unceasing boost ,but compare to the correlate areas it is belong to low resource utilization province ,it is ecological footprint diversity alter a litter but the develop ability is enhancement year by year .?the per capita ecological footprint and per capita GDP have a highly positive correlative .we forecast that the ecological footprint about 2010,throuhg the both further curve fitting .the result shown if we do not change the force of production and resource utilization today, if we achieve the vested economic gold ,the per capita ecological footprint in2010 will be 3.6 times of that in 2003.The third part: the areas discrepancy and temporal order analysis in each region of Yunnan provinceThis part mainly exerts measure regional economics discrepancy of regional economics to analyze regional structure and duration fluxional of the ecological footprint of Yunnan province, it is includes three aspects: ?the ecological footprint and it is fluxional of each region of Yunnan province during 1988-2003 ;?analyzing spatial frameworks of per capita ecological footprint regional discrepancy exert dispersion and ratio; ?analyzing temporal order of per capita ecological footprint is mainly using range, Relatively range, stander deviation, coefficient of range, coefficient of variation to calculate absolute discrepancy and relative discrepancy of per capita ecological footprint of Yunnan province.Through computation and analysis ,we find that: ?The per capita ecological footprint of each regions of Yunnan province takes on ascendant trend generally, and the disparity also shows as trend of expanding. According to average of many years, the rank the per capita ecological footprint for each region is: Lijiang, Yuxi, Diqing, Kunming, Lincang, Banna, Dehong, Qujing, Dali, Chuxiong, Baoshan, Honghe, Zhaotong, Simao, Wenshan, Nujiang, Dongchuan, the order is from great to little. ?Not only matter absolute difference but also relative difference, the ecological footprint regional space pattern all demonstrate great difference among all the regions. ?As a whole, the absolute difference of the per capita ecological footprint of Yunnan province is expanding constantly, the relative difference fluctuation is very large, but the general trend shows dwindle constantly.Part four: The problem faced in sustainable development of Yunnan province and policy recommendationsBased on the analyses of the basic intension of sustainable development and the specificcondition of Yunnan province as well as the studying of regional difference, combine specific circumstance of Yunnan, the article analyzes the problems which Yunnan faced in order to implement sustainable development in two aspects: regional developing factor such as resource, population, ecologic environment and the regional structure of the area (regional difference), and then suggested some polices and proposals for the sustainable development of Yunnan province in aspects of resource, management, environment protection, control population, technical innovation, adjustment industrial structure as well as reinforced regional connection and so on.The last part: conclusion and problemsThe last part offers a conclusion, which is followed by the discussion of the theory of ecological footprint and the problems in this paper, as well as the problems which would be studied in the future,The innovation of the thesis:1. The biggest innovation of the thesis is that it proposes geographical paradigm against the limitation of ecological footprint and the present problems, which is not only in favor of the further study of ecological theory, but also is of great practical significance in leading and optimization of the sustainable development of Yunnan Province.2. The concept of the difference between the region of ecological footprint is proposed for the first time. The methods of measuring regional gaps in Regional Economic are putting into use in analyzing the regional difference of ecological footprint.3. It will make great progress for improving ecological footprint that combining environmental pollution to the calculation of ecological footprint.4. It is a diachronic study which avoids the disadvantages of instantaneity feature of ecological footprint. The analysis of the relation between average ecological footprint and GDP, produces a proposed regress model which makes the ecological footprint model has the function of forecasting and fore-analyzing.
