Cultivating national defense students by reliance on education resources in university meets the new trend of development of military revolution, and is a significant innovation of cadre training. Grass-roots unit cultural work of army is component part of comprehensive quality of national defense students, and it's a new topic to improve national defense students' ability of grass-roots unit cultural work. Through using historical literature research and investigation research, this thesis get an in-depth insight into grass-roots army, and then present some approaches to improve national defense students'ability of grass-roots unit cultural work..The paper divided into four parts. In the first part, it illuminates the meaning of national defense students, the origin of it, and the approaches of cultivating reserve officers by worldwide main countries, as well as the training goals of national defense students in our country.In the second part, this thesis discusses the meaning, character, characteristic, position and function of grass-roots unit cultural work in army, which makes a significant contribution to cultivate core values of contemporary revolutionary soldier, improve the ideological and ethical standards and scientific and cultural levels of army, and promote all-round development of officers. It also demonstrates the necessity of improving national defense students'ability of grass-roots unit cultural work.In the third part, the paper discusses the present situation and the problems of cultivating national defense students'ability of grass-roots unit cultural work. Firstly, with regard to the objective cultivation environment of national defense students, there are differences between campus culture and grass-roots unit cultural work of army. Secondly, in terms of their subjective understanding, national defense students neglect the impact of talents training form new revolution in military affairs, which deeply restrict the development of talents training in grass-roots unit cultural work. Thirdly, for national defense students themselves, they don't know the general laws of grass-roots unit cultural work in army, and misunderstand the goal of cultural work.In the forth part, it explores some countermeasures to enforce national defense students' ability of grass-roots unit cultural work in army. Firstly, we should let students understand the importance of grass-roots unit cultural work in army. Secondly, we can research the teaching reform and innovation in the course of grass-roots unit cultural work in army, and extend the classroom knowledge to campus cultural. Thirdly, we can incorporate national defense students'club in some institutes, and develop the function of the students'club to enforce national defense students'ability of grass-roots unit cultural work in army. Fourthly, we can establish the interactive mechanism with other students'club. Fifthly, we can infect national defense students with colorful defense education activities to enforce the fundamental cultural capability of national defense students.
